Description
The 1981 Heavy Metal film had spent nearly two decades as one of animation's most durable cult objects before a follow-up finally arrived. Heavy Metal 2000 - released as F.A.K.K.² outside North America - drew on The Melting Pot, the graphic novel by Kevin Eastman, Simon Bisley and Eric Talbot, and starred the voices of Michael Ironside, Julie Strain and Billy Idol.
This hardcover was published alongside it, and it functions as considerably more than a promotional tie-in. It carries the illustrated story, a foreword, and a substantial gallery section - which is where the real value sits, because the artists involved are among the most distinctive working in the medium at that time.
Simon Bisley is the headline. His painted work on Slaine, Lobo, and ABC Warriors had made him one of the most imitated artists in comics, and the cover here is characteristic Bisley: heavily rendered, anatomically extreme, and completely unlike anyone else's. Kevin Eastman brought his own considerable standing, having co-created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before acquiring Heavy Metal and running it as publisher. The two had collaborated before, and the F.A.K.K.² project ran across roughly thirteen years from concept to screen.
Collectible Value
Limited edition hardcovers from Heavy Metal's publishing programme were produced in restricted quantities and never reprinted. The house had a small operation and a specific readership, and print runs reflected that - the numbered edition for this title was capped in the low five figures.
Bisley is the primary driver of demand. His painted work commands a following that extends well beyond the titles it appeared in, and hardcover editions with Bisley covers are collected by people who have no particular interest in the film. That gives this book a buyer base considerably wider than a typical movie tie-in.
Hardcover survival is also better than magazine-format material from the same publisher, but the edition size is far smaller, so presentable copies remain genuinely scarce. Sealed and near-mint examples have appreciated steadily, and the Eastman connection adds a further collector thread via the Turtles audience.
